The quest to power Africa

African countries have moved on to alternative and rapid solutions to meet the increasing energy demand for the last decade.  İt is estimated that $300 billion will be needed for all of sub-Saharan Africa to have access to electricity in the next 15 years. Currently, we are at 25% which, if you consider consumption per capita, equates to one-sixth of the world’s average.

 Because of, high investment requirements for power plants, necessary  for political stability, generally the giant mobile generators and power ships was used in a lot of African countries in last 10 years. Turkish energy companies, about mobile generators and power ships  the most active player in sub saharan. Today, Turkish companies produce electricity in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Mozambiue, Gambia and Madagascar.

 İt is obvious that the option to produce electricity by the generator can not be continued in the long term. It should be noted that the cost of generating electricity by the generator or powerships is four times more expensive than other options.

 At that time, Russian Federation offer new option for african energy market. Russia’s Atomic Energy Corporation, ROSATOM developed the ‘Akademik Lomonosov’ worlds first floating nuclear power plant (FNPP). Akademik Lomonosov, is the property of the Russian nuclear operator Rosenergoatom. It contains two KLT-40C naval propulsion reactors with a 35 MWe capacity each. These are mounted on a barge that is 144 meters long by 30 meters wide .

 Also, wessel can be converted into a desalination plant with a capacity to produce 240,000 cubic metres of fresh water each day . The importance of this detail can be understood very necessary clean water in some parts of Africa is showered.


On the other hand, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) is planning to complete its construction of a small modular multifunction floating reactor by 2020. It will be the first Chinese floating reactor, with design known as ACPR50S. Construction will start in 2017 and it is expected to start generating electricity by 2020.

 According to CGN, this 200 MW (60 MWe) reactor is designed to provide electricity, heat and desalination. It can be used on islands or coastal areas, and also for offshore oil and gas exploration.

The plant uses a small modular reactor and is based on the offshore version of the 100 MWe ACP1000S design from China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC).

 According to many experts, China plans to build more of these ships as a rapid solution to the growing need for electricity in Africa. It should be noted that countries producing electricity have a serious political influence on local government.


According to Russian authorities, theese vhessels will be used in areas where electricity is difficult to produce, such as Antarctica.

 On the other side, when Russia is expected to build six more of these vessels in the near future. However, we cannot interfere with the production of energy, which is a very important part of the new Russia’s African policy. More explicitly, these vessels are especially building for African energy market.

Rosatom is coming to the African energy market with a new option to meet Africa’s urgent energy needs with a very well-planned project.

ROSATOM’s entry into the market before the Chinese companies will create a huge advantage for Moscow. it can be understood that Russia will be the most important player in this market in sub Saharan..
